NFC Card - Geotab: Quick Start Guide

As a bridge between traditional key management and a fully digital experience, the NFC card provides a familiar method for accessing your vehicle. While our mobile app offers the most comprehensive control over your reservation, the NFC card is an excellent, easy-to-use option for the core functions of locking and unlocking. 


Key Things to Remember:

  • Reservation First: The NFC card only works with an active reservation.
  • "Long Hold" (7 seconds): Use this only once to end your reservation.
  • "Short Tap" (quick tap): Use this throughout your trip to conveniently lock or unlock the vehicle.
  • Alternative Control: If you have trouble with your card, your primary tools for managing the reservation are the Mobile App and the WRA Portal. If those options don't solve the issue, your organization's administrator can also provide support.

This guide will walk through how to use the Geotab NFC card to initiate (validate), unlock, and lock the vehicle easily.

Create a Reservation

The essential first step is to create an active reservation. The NFC card will only function once a reservation is in place. You can conveniently create one through:

  • The Mobile App
  • The Web Reservation App (WRA) Portal 
  • Requesting assistance from an admin in Mission Control 

Starting the Reservation (First Use)

Upon initial arrival at the vehicle:

  1. Have the NFC card ready.
  2. Perform a "Short Tap": Place your NFC card flat against the card reader.
  3. Confirm: The reader will indicate that your reservation has successfully started (e.g., with a green light or an audible signal).

Important Notes on Starting the Reservation

A Short Tap is only required at the start of the reservation if it was created very recently.

Unlocking & locking During the Trip within NFC Card

After the reservation has begun, the vehicle doors can be easily locked and unlocked:

Perform a "Short Tap": Briefly place your NFC card on the reader and immediately remove it. This action will toggle the lock status of the vehicle. The card reader automatically detecting your registered NFC card.

Important Notes on Lock & Unlock the Reservation

If the user performs a Long Hold, two things can happen:

  • If the user is not close to meeting the conditions to end the reservation, the light will simply turn yellow, indicating that no action was taken.
  • If the user meets the conditions to end the reservation, it will automatically finalize, and the vehicle will lock. This process depends on the vehicle’s connection status.

End the reservation

The reservation can be easily ended through:

  • The Mobile App
  • The WRA (Web Reservation App) Portal 
  • Requesting assistance from an admin in Mission Control 

Alternatively, the reservation can be ended using an NFC card.

Perform a "Long Hold": Place the NFC card on the reader and hold it for approximately 7 seconds.

Confirmation of End Reservation on the NFC Card Reader:

Reservation Ended (Green Light): If the action is successful, the light will turn green, and the vehicle will lock. It'll know the reservation has ended.

Access Denied (Orange Light): If the access fails, the light will turn orange for the same duration as a successful action. If this happens, please try placing your NFC card on the reader again.
